Big Box Store
A list. Any cart. Any cost.
Ten things to find, and about five minutes to find them. The shop is laid out differently every time you walk in, so nobody gets to memorise where the pasta lives. You read the signs, pick an aisle, and start scanning the shelf for the one packet that matches the picture on your list. Find all ten and you still have to get to the tills.
What you're doing in there
Your list is ten pictures
They’re the same little drawings the shop puts on its shelves. So you’re hunting a shape and a colour, on a shelf holding nine tins that nearly match. The name is there if you need it. After a round or two you stop reading it.
A different shop every time
The aisles move. The departments move. What’s on the shelves moves. There are five shops, from a corner grocery up to a warehouse, and each one opens when you finish the last. You never get to learn a floor plan. You do get quick at reading one.
Somebody is watching
Guards walk their rounds. The cameras sweep the corridors on a timer and go amber before they go red, which is your cue to be somewhere else. Freezer alcoves and dump bins will hide you from across the shop. They will not hide you from a guard standing next to you.
Other people’s carts
Half the shoppers are pushing something that’s on your list. Have a rummage while nobody’s looking and you’ve saved yourself a walk. The first one is free. After that somebody tells security, and you can feel the whole shop pick up speed. Change your mind and it costs you nothing.
Read the boards
Every aisle is signed and the departments are signed above them, so you can usually get an item down to one corridor without walking the shop. That is deliberately as much help as you get. Pause and there is a map of the floor with you and the tills on it, and nothing at all marked from your list.
Walk with one thumb
Drag the stick in the bottom corner to move, and tap an item once you are at the shelf. The stick goes on whichever side you want it, or under wherever your thumb happens to land.
